GAINESVILLE - A limited amount of flu vaccine is scheduled to arrive in Gainesville and will be administered at clinics throughout the 13-county North Health District 2 starting December 13.
Public health departments in the region
will be offering the vaccine in accordance to guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and the Georgia Division of Public Health, according to Dave Palmer, a spokesman for District 2. Therefore, Palmer says, persons in the following high-risk groups will be given priority:
1) Persons 65 years of age and older
2) Health care workers who provide direct patient care
3) Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children
younger than 6 months
4) Persons aged 2-64 years with underlying chronic medical
conditions
5) Children aged 6 months to 18 years on chronic aspirin therapy
6) Children aged 6 months to 23 months
7) Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season
He says people who fall into these categories should seek the flu shot December 13 from 8:00 a.m.-noon and from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at the heath departments in Banks, Dawson, Forsyth,
Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union
and White counties. Palmer says flu clinics will begin December 13 and will be held
daily until all available vaccine is given.
Flu shots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis to persons in high-risk groups only.
Public health officials expect demand for the vaccine to be high. Therefore, expect that there may be crowds at the clinics and allow plenty of time to receive service.
Cost for the vaccine is $20. Medicare and Medicaid are accepted at all health departments.
