Chattahoochee-Oconee land management plan released

GAINESVILLE - The U.S. Forest Service has released the new land management plan for the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests.

The agency says the plan effectively creates a blueprint aimed at improving forest health, productivity, and the "enjoyment" of the forests. Spokeswoman Karen McKenzie says public participation in the planning process reached a new level.

"We had an unprecedented level of public involvement during the planning process," McKenzie said. "Tens of thousands of people commented throughout the planning period.

McKenzie says the plan goes to great lengths to spell out ways to protect the rivers and streams in the Chattahoochee-Oconee. "Areas around our streams and waterways will be protected and managed carefully to make sure our water is clean and clear."

The plan contains no "objective" for timber management - or harvesting - a source of much controversy over the years. McKenzie says that is a "unique" feature of the plan. There are, however, provisions for timber-cutting for specific, forest-related matters.

"Grading wildlife openings or creating a scenic overlook or addressing insect or disease infestation. Those are three examples that come to mind right away," she said.

McKenzie says the public has 90 days to review the plan and comment on it - and it is subject to more revision.
