'Damon Evans Day' planned in Gainesville

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville is poised to celebrate Damon Evans Day in early March in honor of the native son who is the incoming athletics director at the University of Georgia.

The celebration will be held March 2, the same day as the presidential primary, the SPLOST vote, the Georgia flag referendum, and the special elections in Flowery Branch.

City councilman Mark Musselwhite is on the organizing committee and says they are sensitive to everything that will be going on that day, but they had no choice if they wanted outgoing A.D. Vince Dooley, Evans, and football coach Mark Richt all here.

"(That) is a very special and tough thing to do," Musselwhite said. "So, it left it as the only date. We were trying to do this in March, April, or May, and that is the only date all three of them had an open calendar date during the week."

Musselwhite says plans for the banquet are still being worked out but its set for 7:30 p.m. March 2 at the mountians center.

"And, we just want to honor him and thank him and tell him Gainesville's proud of him."

Tickets go on sale next week, according to Linda Henry, president of the Lanierland Bulldog Club. Henry says the tickets will range in price from $500 for a corporate table for eight to $25 for individual tickets which incudes the meal to $10 for anyone who wants to attend but not eat. Ticket outlets are expected to be announced next week.

She says planning for the event began almost at the moment Evans was tapped for the job a few weeks ago.
