Gainesville plant closing

GAINESVILLE - The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that Presco Steel in Gainesville will close this fall - leaving about 90 people out of work.

The steel making and steel erecting company is a part of FabTech Industries of Columbia, South Carolina, and, according to the Atlanta business weekly, will close in October, cutting 87 jobs.

Efforts over the last two days to get comment from Presco officials in Gainesville and FabTech officials in Columbia have been unsuccessful.

However, the Atlanta Business Chronicle report quotes one veteran Presco official as saying the weak economy is partly to blame for the decision to close the plant.
