Pace to quicken next week at Lake Lanier Olympic Center

GAINESVILLE - The pace of activity will quicken next week as we head toward the Olympics qualifier at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center at Clarks Bridge Park.

Lanier Canoe 2003, the 33rd International Canoe Federation Flatwater Racing World Championships, will be held at the venue September 10-14.

Early in the week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin installing "keep out" buoys as the lake in the area of the park and the boat ramp are closed; residents of the area will need passes to go through the area at "no wake" speeds; and the venue will open.

About 1,000 athletes from 79 counties will be vying for the right to compete in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
