Gainesville City Council responds to 'sink hole' comment

By by Jerry Gunn
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Councilman George Wangemann responded Thursday to city school board comments earlier this week regarding a sink hole near a city school.

Wangemann said whether it is the golf course or the sink hole at Fair Street Elementary School, council's number one priority is safety - and always has been.

At a called meeting Monday, school board member Kelvin Simmons said a sink hole on the golf course would have been fixed right away.

The city council and the school board meet next Monday to discuss a number of cost issues, including who pays for the sink hole.

MEDICAL CENTER BLUEPRINT

The council was briefed on the Northeast Georgia Medical Center's Blueprint for the Future - a $400 million expansion project announced several weeks ago.

Part of the plan calls for a 100-bed extension on a 52 acre site in South Hall County by the year 2008.

City Councilman George Wangemann wanted to know where the money was coming from.

President and CEO John Ferguson said Northeast Georgia Health Systems has an aggressive financial plan in place. The plan features a "cash map" - with weekly and monthly monetary targets that have to be reached.

SEWER HELP

The City of Gainesville stands willing to help with sewer development in the county - but with conditions, according to City Manager Bryan Shuler. Shuler told council members Thursday the city had heard from County Commissioner Deborah Lynn.

Issues include how it will be paid for and whose allocation the money will come from.

Shuler said the city is not interested in resolving any jurisdictional battles.
