Storm shelters sought in Hall

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Last week's stormy weather has prompted a Gainesville woman to launch a campaign to set up a series of storm shelters in Hall County.

Connie Davis said Monday she has been in touch with some county officials about the idea, and plans to formally present it to the county commisison next Monday. Davis says the shelters would be primarily be for people who don't have basements or any similar places in their homes or places of business.

"(But) whoever wants to go, I mean, whoever wants to go to these places during the time that (a) tornado watch or warning is available."

Davis, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, recalls that the basement of the civic center was used at one time as a community storm shelter.

"We certainly took our son, Chris, there, with many other residents, and it was a safeguard, I cannot tell you."
