Gailey cautious about jail bid

GAINESVILLE - One Hall County Comissioner said Monday he wanted more assurance that the county was getting the most for its money on the biggest project in years.

Staff is recommending to the Commission a $96,500 bid from Facility Group for preliminary work on the new Hall County Detention Center.

Commissioner Steve Gailey is not so sure.

"I just want to make sure that we're not getting into something on the latter end," Gailey said. "I don't want us committed when we get ready to bid on the construction aspect of it."

Gailey said Facility Group's bid was $35,000 higher than the lowest of the top three bids, sent by Clemmons Rutherford.

WRONG DIRECTI0N

Hall County's Public Works Director told County Commissioners that road repaving is going in the wrong direction.

Rob Rivers reported the State Transportation Department was contracting to pave 11 miles of county roads in all four districts under the state's Local Assistance Road Paving or LARP program.

Rivers said the state and county are headed in the wrong direction with catching up on resurfacing needs, with Hall County already two hundred miles behind with its repaving.

ILLEGAL ROAD?

A road abandonment request left Hall County Commissioners scratching their heads during the work session.

Property holders want an approved right of way between H. Thomas Road and Thomas Road abandoned in favor of a another road that was privately cut without county approval.

"It's unusual that they did not get the permits to do it," Cole said. "We're in the position of considering the approval of an illegally constructed road."

Cole said the second road was better than the first one and the abandonment request gets a vote when the Commission meets in regular session Thursday.
