GAINESVILLE - Molly Childers, a Gainesville High School senior, is one of ten nationwide winners of a $10,000 college scholarship in an anti-smoking campaign.

The TeensH.I.P. (Teens Helping Influence People) Awards were given to high school seniors who, according to the sponsors, share three important characteristics: "they are academic superstars, make significant contributions to their schools and communities and are outspoken about their decision not to smoke cigarettes."

The program is sponsored by Lorillard Tobacco Company's Youth Smoking Prevention Program.

Officials with the program say there were more thn 48,000 applicants this year, more than triple the number in years past.

They say Molly's leadership on the golf course, in Advanced Placement U.S. History, in her spare time at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, and as a volunteer at Hall County Juvenile Court where she works with underprivieged kids "distinguishes her as an ideal TeenH.I.P. Awards winner."

Molly was recognized for her answer to the essay question "What advice would you give your peers about staying away from cigarettes?"

Her answer: "If my words have not had an impact on my peers, I know that my actions have. My choice to leave a room if someone lights a cigarette has definitely caused those around me to think about what they are doing and consider changing their lifestyles."
