Musselwhite: Braselton sewer idea 'interesting'

By By Jerry Gunn
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Councilman Mark Mussellwhite said Monday that Braselton's offer to Hall County to exchange impact fee collection for a sewer district is food for thought.

"It's interesting," Musselwhite said.

Braselton will begin collecting Hall County impact fees as soon as it gets a sewer service area in Hall County, according to Braselton City Manager Jennifer Scott.

Braselton could only collect $6,000 in SPLOST V revenues, but a sewer district would benefit Hall County.

Scott estimates Braselton would collect over $500,000 in impact fees for the county, since development follows sewer lines.

Mussellwhite said he was not prepared to say if Gainesville could come up with an exchange, but thought Braselton had a good idea.

Sewer lines would not come into play with Gainesville since it already serves the county with sewer.

"Just know that we're going look at all the cards we have to play," Mussellwhite said.

Hall County cities have until January 31st to agree with the county's proposal to collect impact fees in exchange for monthly receipt of SPLOST V funds.

Mussellwhite called the proposal demanding and singlehanded.

The voters have the final say on SPLOST V when they vote to reject or approve it March 2nd.
