Fordham: Hall schools will research PETA request

By By Scott Kimbler
GAINESVILLE - Hall County School Superintendent Dr. Dennis Fordham says they will research a recent request to abandon the practice of dissecting animals in biology class.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals made the request saying it makes student insensitive to animals.

Fordham said they will consult biology teachers in the system along with the Department of Education and the National Science Teachers Association.

"We will want to get that together and then talk again with our high school teachers and principles," he said. "And be sure that we have given carefull consideration to the information PETA has provided."

He adds there is no timetable to make a decision.

PETA spokesperson Sangeeta Kumar said there are other means of teaching the classes.

"CD-Roms, virtual dissection, videos, models - not dead animals on a slab," Kumar said.

The request came after two teens were accused of shooting two horses earlier this month.

Rodger Dale Pitts III, 18, Clermont and Jared Blake Dillin, 18, Gainesville were arrested December 13 for the shooting at a farm in North Hall.

PETA also claims there is a correlation between dissection of animals in biology classes and abuse of animals by young people.
