It's rare when games live up to the actual hype. But the Gainesville-Flowery Branch showdown at City Park Stadium Friday night did just that.

It didn't go down to the wire as Gainesville led the entire way. But the two offenses put on a show as the Red Elephants (2-1) held off the Class 4A seventh-ranked Falcons 42-35 (2-1) to snap a three-game losing streak in the series. It also snapped a couple of interesting streaks for Flowery Branch. The Falcons had won 16 straight against Hall County teams, including Gainesville, going back to a loss to North Hall in the 2016 season-opener. It also snapped Coach Ben Hall's crazy streak of beating Hall County opponents, which ended at 21 straight, including his time as Jefferson's head coach.

Another massive showdown saw Class 6A No. 1 Buford roll past No. 8-ranked Myers Park (N.C.) 44-17 at Tom Riden Stadium in a battle between highly-ranked teams in their state. And those weren't the only ones.

Class 2A No. 3 Rabun County routed defending Class A North Carolina state champion Murphy 59-14 on the road.

Meanwhile, several teams picked up their first wins of the season on Friday. Banks County ran past Lumpkin County 26-16 and East Hall held off a scrappy Johnson squad 49-35 in Oakwood. Dawson County also got its first win blasting Northview, 52-7, at Tiger Stadium while Lakeview Academy was able to sneak past Walker, 31-20, in Marietta.
