GAINESVILLE — Chestatee High School has promoted top assistant Tanner Plemmons to head coach of the boys' basketball program.

Chestatee Athletic Director Matt Stowers made the announcement official Friday afternoon. Plemmons takes over for Josh Travis, who was hired to take over the boys' program at Cherokee Bluff earlier this week.

“We didn’t have to look far for the best fit for the War Eagle basketball program," Stowers said. "Tanner is a man of character, courage and commitment. He makes the best coaching staff in the state even better.”

Plemmons has served as the War Eagles' top assistant for the past two seasons.

Plemmons has a rich basketball heritage, growing up with a father who is a basketball coach, playing at a high level and coaching both collegiate and high school teams.

A 2012 graduate of Rabun County High School, Plemmons was named the Region 8A Player of the Year in both 2010 and 2011. He was selected to the GACA All-State first team in 2010, 2011, and 2012, and the AJC All-State 1st Team in 2012. Plemmons holds the state record for made 3-point shots in a career with 406.

Plemmons played collegiately at Stetson University and the University of North Georgia.  He was a multi-year scholar-athlete at UNG and set the school record for 3-point shots made in a game with nine.

After graduating from UNG in 2016, he served as an assistant coach for its mens’ program. In 2017, he began teaching and coaching in the Lumpkin County School System. He was hired by Chestatee in 2019 to teach and help with the boys’ basketball program.

“Coach Plemmons has a wealth of basketball knowledge and experiences, “said Chestatee Principal Christy Cantrell. “He brings continuity and consistency to our boys’ basketball program, and I could not be happier that he chose Chestatee.”

“This has been a lifelong dream of mine,” said Plemmons “…to become a head coach. I cannot think of a better place and community to start my head coaching journey. I am thankful to be given the opportunity to lead this outstanding group of young men. I feel that with the right amount of hard work, and the right attitude, this group has a chance to be very successful.”

Tanner Plemmons was elevated to head boys basketball coach at Chestatee High School on Friday.
