Friday crash involving school bus injured at least one student in Hall County

Several people, including at least one student, were injured Friday afternoon in a crash involving a school bus in East Hall County.

The Georgia State Patrol reports that the crash happened just before 4:20 p.m. on Barrett Road near Dorsey Peek Road. Officials said a Jeep Compass Sport was going west on Barrett Road when it approached a stopped eastbound Hall County Schools bus that was stopped with its stop sign out and red lights flashing, dropping off students.

The driver of the Jeep reportedly tried to stop but lost control and left the roadway. The car hit a mailbox, re-entered the roadway and hit the left side of the bus.

All three people in the Jeep were taken to a nearby hospital with what the state patrol called non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Jeep, whose name has not been released, was cited with failure to maintain lane and failure to stop for a school bus.

The state patrol initially reported that five people in the bus, including the driver and four juveniles, were injured. Hall County Schools Spokesman Stan Lewis said the school district is only aware of one student on the bus who was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The state patrol issued a response to that discrepancy Saturday morning:

"The latest preliminary report does show four juveniles injured, but of course that information could be updated as the investigation continues into this incident and more details become available," officials said.
