A Cleveland man was arrested after a chase that spanned over Habersham and White County Sunday morning.
A Habersham County officer attempted to pull over 45-year-old Jeffrey Thornton of Cleveland in the area of Duncan Bridge Road and Pea Ridge Road just after 4 a.m. Sunday.
Officials say Thornton — in a white Honda van — failed to yield and continued at a high rate of speed, crossing into White County.
Upon entry into White County, the van allegedly made a sharp left turn and traveled through a ditch and a fence before Thornton fled on foot.
Thornton was found by the Helen Police Department roughly 75 yards away from the vehicle where he was allegedly hiding behind a stack of cement blocks.
Thornton was charged by the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office with fleeing and attempting to elude, possession of methamphetamine, probation violation, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, and littering. The Georgia State Patrol also charged Thornton with driving under the influence.
Thornton was booked at the Habersham County Detention Center in Clarkesville, where he remains Monday.
