By Austin Eller News Director

A young boy was found dead Thursday morning with multiple stab wounds during an apartment fire in Peachtree Corners.

According to a press release from the Gwinnett County Police Department, the police department and county fire department responded at about 8 a.m. to an apartment fire at 4900 Springs Lane.

Arriving fire crews could hear a fire alarm coming from the unit on the first level. They entered the unit and found the unresponsive boy with multiple stab wounds.

The agency said the boy was about six years old. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was the only occupant inside the apartment at the time of the fire.

Officers located a woman behind the building at about 9:15 a.m. Her clothing was wet and she was wearing only one sock. She was taken into custody.

"Detectives are working to determine her involvement in this criminal investigation," the release reads. "At this point, detectives believe she also resided in the apartment where the child was found."

The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. The motivation for the crime is also still under investigation.

The agency did not release any information about the fire, or the extent of any damage caused by the fire.
