Hall County Planning Commission recommends shopping complex for approval

By Christian Ashliman Anchor/Reporter

The Hall County Planning Commission voted unanimously Monday night in approval of a new shopping complex on Cleveland Highway.

If final approval is given by the Board of Commissioners, the complex will include a grocery store, convenience store, gas station and restaurant on the 6.35-acre lot where Cleveland Highway and Jim Hood Road intersect. The original application submitted to the commission requested to rezone the property from Agricultural Residential III to Suburban Shopping. The site is currently developed with a single-family home. No one spoke in opposition to the rezoning.

The commission heard from the applicant’s representative, who provided information about the retail area, saying it has not yet been determined which stores and restaurants will be housed on the property. It is their intent to host an independent grocery store and preliminary interest suggests IGA as a candidate.

Planning commissioner Stan Hunt said adding another shopping location further north may help with community travel flow.

“It falls within the future land use of the area, as well as I think it's a needed product for the area,” Hunt said. “In fact, people being able to shop closer will relieve traffic off of 120, not coming into Gainesville.”

The application proposes an 11,000-square-foot grocery store, a 4,000-square-foot restaurant and a 3,250-square-foot convenience store with an attached gas station. It was not stated when construction might begin.

The Hall County Board of Commissioners will have the final vote on January 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hall County Government Center
