Mother in Hall County Jail for failing to get medical treatment for child

By AccessWDUN Staff

A mother remained in the Hall County Jail on Thursday afternoon after she was charged in a cruelty case involving her young daughter.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office had investigated for more than a year before arresting Zaira Zarate, 27, of Gainesville.

"According to the initial investigation, between January and October of 2019, Zarate failed to provide the victim, 4 at the time, with proper medical treatment" said Lt. Greg Cochran in an email statement. "Zarate missed more than 25 doctor’s appointments for the child and a year of physical therapy. The victim also suffered a (genital) injury that went untreated."

Investigators were first notified of the alleged mistreatment on Oct. 30, 2019 when the Hall County Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) removed the girl from the home. The child has been in state custody since that time.

Zarate was arrested on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2020 and charged with second degree cruelty to children.
