Thanksgiving Day lasts but twenty-four hours or, as some scholars say, at least until the leftovers are gone. While feasting is limited, the thanks should be an every day thing. Unfortunately we often forget this. That's why I love Thanksgiving. It is an intentional time. I don't think we're intentional enough in our lives. If we were, gym memberships wouldn't go unused after January.
At Thanksgiving we are reminded that we have more to be thankful for than we take time to acknowledge in our day-to-day lives. Topping my list is a loving God, family, friends, food, and shelter. But this year I'm also thinking about things that don't fall on the "Thanksgiving Top FIve". I call it the "also ran" list. Those are the things that aren't necessary for survival, but they certainly make life more enjoyable. They are every day items that we take for granted when we have them and miss the sorely when we don’t.
I gave this some thought on a recent run. Thoughts like this often occur while running. Unless you are chasing someone or being chased, there's not much to hold your mind. So here goes. My Thanksgiving "also ran" list.
- A can opener-It’s hard to get excited about a bowl of soup when you can’t get the can open.
- PEZ-The candy isn't all that good, but the dispensers always bring a smile.
- Shoelace nibs-Those are the things that keep the ends of your shoelaces from fraying. Many a person has lost their religion while trying to lace a boot without them.
- Perfume inserts in magazines-These make great car air fresheners. Just stick them under you seat and enjoy.
- Flavored envelope glue-They make me look forward to paying bills....almost.
- Getting a real letter-I like the convenience and quickness of email communication, but getting a real letter is special. I love the fact that someone took time to write and mail the thing. When I open one, it feels like opening a birthday or Christmas present. Like I said: Special.
- Neoprene ski vests-Sexier than a ski belt, they actually make me look buff. Well…sort of.
- Snow globes-Give one a shake for an instant escape.Young and old are always captivated by their magic. One day I hope to be a snow globe repairman. I think it would be satisfying.
- Peanuts comic strip-Linus is my hero but Charlie Brown is my reality.
- A good pen-Thoughts flow better when the ink doesn't blob.
