GAINESVILLE - The historic hotel in Gainesville owned and operated by an American Civil War Icon is now open to the public Saturday after a long and painstaking restoration.
Only a portion of Confederate General James Longstreet's Piedmont Hotel remains, but Longstreet Society treasurer Joe Whitaker says it is as close to the original appearance as the society and the Gainesville-Hall County Trust for Historic Preservation could make it.
"We've tried to get antiques that were around the period," Whitaker said. "When you come in you can see the high ceilings and the wood floors."
Also featured is a six and a half foot photocopy of a painting of Longstreet; the original is on exhibit at the Chickamauga National Battlefield Park near Chattanooga.
Visitors can turn south on Main Street off Jesse Jewell Parkway, turn right off Main onto Martin Luther King Boulevard, go one block and then turn right on Maple Street to find the Piedmont.
"We will be open at present on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Whitaker said.
