Braselton approved for Phase 2 of RiverWalk

UNDATED - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (Parks, Recreation & Historic Sites Division) has approved the Mulberry RiverWalk project's Phase 2 plans and progress in Braselton.

Mayor Pat Graham has received official notice of a $100,000 state grant for Phase 2.

The 5.75-mile river corridor park portion must undergo an environmental review of potential impacts on endangered species, historic, archaeological and cultural resources. Phase 2 designs include the section of the river corridor from New Liberty Church Road toward Georgia 124 near Josh Pirkle Road.

The state grant is administered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources under the Federal Recreational Trails program.

Braselton officials said last fall a Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grant of $100,000 and town funding would pay for the trail's first phase.

Plans call for public access and parking to be located near the Falls of Braselton subdivision entrance east of Georgia 211. The trail will follow the river through Barrow and Gwinnett counties, tracing the Jackson County border and ending in Hall County at Riverbend at Mulberry Park subdivision.

Phase 2 involves a trail that will lead to a 71-acre multi-use park planned for Georgia 124.

The town has acquired more than 100 acres along the Mulberry River to preserve its banks.

Braselton officials say developers and residents donated all park land. When completed, the Riverwalk will connect more than 300 acres of green space.
