Base spokesman Nat Fahy said the shooting occurred at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. A base news release says the shooting isn't considered an act of terrorism and that there is no active gunman.
The statement from the base said the guard used an M4 rifle to kill the other guard. Fahy said there were other sentries at the gate at the time of the shooting, but he had no additional details, and other base officials didn't immediately return phone calls seeking comment.
The identity of the two guards is being withheld until relatives are notified.
Naval Criminal Investigative Service is looking into the shooting.
