GAINESVILLE - The Veterans and Community Outreach Center in Gainesville made a public appeal Sunday as it tries to regroup after a burglary last week that included the loss of items intended for Christmas for the less fortunate in the community.

The executive director, Victor Lamar Johnson, says the thieves got in by breaking a large window then took the children's toys and computers.

Johnson says only five gifts were left and if their luck doesn't turn around they will have no Christmas this year.

He said Sunday the list of needs includes children's clothing and toys, for ages 5-12, for both girls and boys; five inside office doors; one heavy outside door; two flatbed printers; and, two monitors for the computer lab.

According to its Web site, the Veterans and Community Outreach Center, located in one of the poorest areas of Gainesville, was founded more than 25 years ago by five veterans, "determined to make a difference in the lives of people in crisis," and now reaches more than 3,000 people annually through its programs for youth and families at risk, and people seeking to rebuild their lives.

To make gift donatons or contributions this week, contact Executive Director Victor Lamar Johnson, 770-256-6450, or Michelle Lowe Mintz, bookkeeper, 770-718-0602.
