A Habersham County Paramedic has been named Region 2 Paramedic of the Year.

Habersham County Emergency Services announced on Sept. 22 that Elisha Higgins was recognized with the honor. Higgins was nominated for the award by her peers, who described her as “a provider whose commitment to patient care and community service goes far beyond the call of duty,” according to HEMS.

The department emphasized that Higgins' recognition is especially meaningful to her as she remained committed to her duty as a paramedic while also undergoing cancer treatment and chemotherapy.

“She didn’t just survive; she inspired,” her nomination letter said. “Her unwavering dedication, even in the face of personal adversity, is a testament to her strength, character, and true calling as a caregiver.”

HEMS said in a release that as Higgins worked to overcome her challenges, she continued to find ways to contribute to her team and community.

“Elisha is not only a skilled paramedic, she is a warrior, a mentor, and a source of hope and strength for those around her,” the nomination letter continued. “Her journey is one of perseverance, compassion, and an unshakable commitment to serving others.”
