Passenger facing charges in fatal 2017 Rabun County crash released on bond

CLAYTON — One of two brothers arrested for a July 14 wreck that claimed the life of Marshall Wayne Turpin recently was released on bond.

James Cody Smith, 22, was released April 18 on a $50,000 bond and ordered to wear an ankle monitor, according to Rabun County Detention Center personnel.

As of Tuesday morning, Jesse Reeves Smith, 22, identified initially by the Georgia State Patrol as the driver, remains lodged in the Rabun County Detention Center with no bond.

On July 14, a 1995 Chevrolet GMT 400 occupied by the Smith brothers, of Lakemont, intentionally struck a 1988 Ford Bronco occupied by Turpin, 18, on East Wolf Creek Road, according to the GBI. That collision resulted in the death of Turpin and injuries to the other four occupants.

The Smith brothers were arrested Dec. 14.

Jesse Reeves Smith was arrested at the Rabun County Detention Center, where he was incarcerated on unrelated charges, according to the GBI. He was charged with one count of felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault, and one count of making false statements.

James Cody Smith was taken into custody by the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office and was charged with one count of felony murder and four counts of aggravated assault.
