Local elementary school honored

ATLANTA - A Hall County school - Myers Elementary - has been singled out by a state educators' group for winning a national garden-design contest.

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) features an article on the accomplishment in the latest edition of its Page One publication.

"We submitted a garden design to the Weekly Reader/America's Anniversary Garden
contest in February," explains Barber in the article. "The guidelines were to design a garden featuring red, white and blue flowers and to honor the celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the settlement of Jamestown. Our students' design was first chosen as one of 25 finalists, and on May 1, 2007, we found out that they had won the Grand Prize. There were a total of 64 entries from 32 states.

"As a result, four of the SEARCH designing students and three chaperones went to
Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktowne for three days of 'living history' and an award ceremony. The sponsors of the contest were the National Junior Master Gardeners, the Cooperative Extension Service of Virginia, Jamestown-Yorktowne Foundation, Jamestown 2007 and Virginia Tech. Locally we have had the support of the Hall County Master Gardeners."

Eventually, the students will use their design for a garden on the school campus. Due to the drought, however, they have temporarily halted construction. "The kids worked very hard on the design and are very excited about making the 'plan' come to life," Barber told Page One.
