The landscape at Gainesville's historic Piedmont Hotel is getting a makeover.

The hotel, which is now home to the Longstreet Society, was once owned by Confederate Gen. James Longstreet, and is maintained as a museum to Longstreet who lived in Gainesville after the Civil War and served for a time as the town's postmaster.

"We have a chance right now to establish General Longstreet’s beloved  Piedmont Hotel as a unique  historic and horticultural site," reads a recent email from the Longstreet Society.  "With hardscaping done and welcoming paths in place,  we will next install heritage plants and trees, true to the General’s day, in gardens that memorialize and honor Longstreet, his soldiers and Longstreet Society friends and family."

At the center of the grounds will be the rebuilt Piedmont well-house which was once at the very center of the hotel’s daily life.
