The Hall County Solicitor-General’s Office announces new leadership
The Hall County Solicitor-General’s Office has announced a new Chief Assistant and Deputy Chief Assistant.
On Wednesday, Stephanie Thompson was sworn in as the new Chief Assistant for the Hall County Solicitor’s Office. Brooke Jackson will be promoted to Deputy Chief Assistant Solicitor.
Thompson came to the Hall County Solicitor’s Office after an internship in the Gwinnett judicial circuit and has served as a senior trial Assistant Solicitor-General for almost seven years. She has served on multiple accountability courts, is passionate about mental health advocacy, and is an integral part of the continued programming developments in the Office.
Jackson is passionate about victims’ rights and advocacy, as well as access to mental health services. She serves on the Northeastern Judicial Circuit HELP Court program and volunteers with our community charitable agencies to give back to those that serve our victims. Read More

Sherriff: Slain deputies ambushed serving warrant in Georgia
On Friday, a sheriff said that two deputies were killed in an ambush while attempting to serve a warrant at a home in a suburb near Atlanta.
The two deputies had returned to their vehicle after knocking on the door when another car pulled up Thursday night, Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens said. The deputies got out of the vehicle and were talking to a suspect when shots were fired, he said.
The deputies were able to call for help and law enforcement officers swarmed the neighborhood. A long standoff ensued with at least one person. Owens said two suspects were taken into custody and questioned.
Owens did not release the names of the slain deputies, but court records identified the two men in custody as Christopher Golden and Christopher Cook.
They said Golden was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, news outlets reported. The records said the deputies had a warrant to arrest Cook on multiple outstanding theft charges.
The suspects were scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon, and authorities planned a news conference afterward. Read More

UNG’s Gainesville campus set to host Georgia Film Festival
The 2022 Georgia Film Festival will be held on the Gainesville campus of the University of North Georgia this week.
This is the sixth annual festival and will highlight films made in Georgia or produced by filmmakers based in the state. The Event will take place Friday and Saturday in the school's Film and Digital Media building.
One of the films featured will be "10-56", which is directed by Jason Wynn who has taught at the school. Other screenings will include "Blurring the Color Line" and "Halloween to Forget".
Panels and workshops on filmmaking will also be offered including an opportunity for local students to learn about the industry on Saturday.

Seven family members loose home in Lilburn fire
A family of seven was displaced from their home in Lilburn following a fire that caused severe damage to the rear end of the house.
Gwinnett Fire and Rescue Services personnel were dispatched to the house in the 5500 block on Arrowind Road NW about 4:17 a.m. Sunday morning. crews found heavy fire showing from the rear of a two-story residence. The fire was brought under control in approximately 40 minutes.
The home sustained extensive fire damage throughout both floors. A home located to the left of residence sustained minor radiant heat damage to the vinyl siding.
No injuries were reported but two bearded dragons inside the home did not survive.
A fire investigator determined the fire originated inside the screened-in patio in the rear of the home. The exact cause of the fire is undetermined. Read More

Clarkesville jails one person after Thursday robberies
A Cornelia man remains jailed after his arrest Friday for several Clarkesville burglaries.
Allegedly, Coty Shane Hardman entered a vehicle Thursday night at Aire Serv in Walls Complex, taking a cell phone, said Clarkesville Police Chief Brad Barrett.
Barrett also said that Hardman broke into other cars and establishments.
Officers went to a home just outside Clarkesville Friday, where Barrett said they found various stolen items from Thursday night’s thefts.
Hardman was arrested and faces two counts of entering auto, two counts of theft by taking, burglary, and additional charges, Barrett said. Read More
