Mary Carolyn Gravitt, age 84 of Buford, GA passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2014. She is survived by her niece, Faith Gravitt Russell, Suwanee, GA; great nieces, Mary and Travis Spencer, Krystle Blackmon and Katie Russell; three great, great nieces; one great, great nephew; and special first cousin, Franklin (Bo) Orr, Flowery Branch, GA. Carolyn was born on October 9, 1930 in Flowery Branch, Hall County, GA. She moved with her family to Buford, GA in 1942 and lived there until her death. She was a 1947 graduate of Buford High School and a 1948 graduate of Greenleaf Business School in Atlanta, GA. She worked as a secretary in the private sector until 1954 when she went to work for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers during the construction of Buford Dam. She completed her government service in 1991 when she retired from the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney's Office in Atlanta, GA. She later worked part-time at the First Baptist Church in Buford and ended her working career as secretary at Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Buford for over seventy years where she was very active. She served on a number of committees, taught a Junior Sunday School Class for twenty five years and was a member of the Adult Choir for over fifty seven years and most recently with the Silvertones choir. The family will receive friends at Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford on Monday, December 29, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Buford with Reverend Wayne Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Buford where she will join her beloved parents, DeWitt and Nevie Floyd Gravitt, brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Jewell Marshall Gravitt and special aunt and uncle, Bertie and Ben Bales. Carolyn had a great love, concern and compassion for ALL ANIMALS and upon her request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society or Animal Rescue Shelter of your choice.
