Selwyn Evins Simmons

Selwyn Evins Simmons,70, of Gainesville, Georgia passed away on June 18, 2011.

Mrs. Simmons was born August 7, 1940 in Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucius Selwyn Evins and Frances Hawkins Kohrman. She is survived by her husband, William Jemison Simmons, Jr., of Gainesville, Georgia; children, Elizabeth Hand Woods (Mike) of Birmingham and Dan Hogan Arnold (Mary) of Charlotte, NC; step-daughter, Miriam Simmons Willis (Jay) of Daphne, AL; eleven grandchildren; and her brother, Lucius S. Evins III (Mary Verne).

She attended Brooke Hill School for Girls in Birmingham, Sweetbriar College, the University of Alabama where she was affiliated with Chi Omega Sorority, and graduated from Samford University. She was an avid yoga enthusiast, participant in the BULLI program at Brenau University, and for many years, a volunteer at The Guest House Adult Day Health Center in Gainesville, Georgia. Among her many passions was her love of all animals, especially her cats.

Visitation will be Monday, June 20, 2011, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Cathedral Church of the Advent, 2017 6th Ave N, Birmingham, AL, followed by a private memorial service for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hall County Animal Shelter, 1688 Barber Road, Gainesville, GA 30507 or The Guest House Adult Day Health Center, 320 Tower Heights Road, Gainesville, GA 30501.
