Mrs. Bonita Waters

Obituary Date: Monday, November 18, 2024

Mrs. Bonita Waters, 84, of Gainesville, passed away Monday, November 18, 2024 at her residence following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 22, 2024 at Timber Ridge Baptist Church. Rev. Chad Dale and Rev. Kody Rylee will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home Thursday, November 21, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Born on September 18, 1940 in Dawsonville, she was the daughter of the late Silvie Duncan and the late Elizabeth (Owen) Duncan. Bonita loved basketball. She played on the girls’ basketball team at Dawson County High School until graduating. She was Miss Dawson County of 1958. She met Wilbert Stowers and they married, moved to Hall County and started a successful chicken and cattle farm. The Stowers family was the Hall County Water and Soil Conservation family of the Year. Mr. Stowers ran for County Commission of their district. The whole family worked on the campaign he successfully won and served for 10 years as a Commissioner. Bonita’s career was also in banking. She worked for First National Bank (now Region’s bank) and was instrumental in the setup of the credit card banking department. She then went to work for Gainesville National Bank where she helped in the setup of the Proofing department. After leaving the banking industry, she went to work for the Hall County School System where she worked for over 23 years in as a substitute School Teacher, as a lunchroom worker and she drove a school bus. She was also one of the band bus drivers for all the games and competitions.

Mrs. Waters was a member of Timber Ridge Baptist Church and was a Sunday school teacher for many years.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Waters was preceded in death by her husbands, Wilbert Stowers and Hal Waters;  son, Johnny Stowers and brothers, Gene Duncan and Boyd Duncan and son in law, Sam Dixon.

Mrs. Waters is survived by her daughter and son in law, Linda and David Stowers of Dawsonville; daughter in law, Maria Stowers; grandsons and wives, Joshua Stowers and Emily, Dillion Stowers and Kaitlyn; great grandchildren, Ellia Robinson, Aiden Stowers, Ashton Stowers, Gabriel Stowers; sister in law, Chris Duncan; brother and sister in law, Floyd and Sherry Duncan and a number of nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
