Travis Raynard Butts

Obituary Date: Saturday, May 27, 2023
Travis Raynard Butts, 54, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away on May 27, 2023, due to an extended battle with cancer. He was born September 21, 1968, in Gainesville, Georgia; the son of Newton Doyle Butts & Alberta (Tate) Butts.

Travis was a native of Gainesville, spending grades K-12 in the Gainesville City School System. He would go on to graduate from Gainesville High School in 1986, and he would immediately enlist into the United States Marine Corps.

A Gulf War veteran, he spent eight years in the Marines, opting for an honorable discharge in 1994. During his military tenure, he would be stationed at Naval Weapons Station Earle in New Jersey and eventually Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He did not go alone, however. He would marry his high school sweetheart, Angelia (Jones) Butts, in May of 1987, and she would be there to accompany him along the east coast. They would go on to have two children, Rashiya Butts (34), and Dreshad Butts (33).

Travis, a former athlete himself, loved sports. He in particular enjoyed the North Carolina Tarheels & the Golden State Warriors basketball. It wasn’t a rarity to catch him in attendance at a local high school basketball or football game either. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren: Arien (11), Benjamin (1), and Brenden (7 months).

As much as he loved sports and his family, Travis was more so a man of God, growing up attending First Baptist Church in Gainesville, Georgia. He eventually would go on to become a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Flowery Branch, Ga, where he remained an active member since 2001.

Travis is preceded in passing by his brothers, Michael Anthony Butts (1995) & Jeffrey Scott Butts (2011). His father, Newton Doyle Butts (2008). His mother, Alberta Butts (2011). He is also preceded by his wife, Angelia Butts (2012).

He will be survived by his children, Rashiya & Dreshad Butts of Oakwood, Georgia. His brother, Timothy Butts of Flowery Branch, Georgia. His sisters, Rhonda (Elaine) Butts & Staci (Baldy) Butts of Gainesville, Georgia. His nephews: Tramon Butts, Jurryan Butts, Javon Butts, and Kell Butts. His nieces, Janai Carradine, Jade Butts, Kamari Butts, and Jenesis Butts. His grandchildren: Arien Butts, Benjamin Butts, and Brenden Hunter. He also leaves a host of cousins, extended family, and friends.

The visitation for Mr. Butts will be Friday, June 2nd at Wimberly Funeral Home between the hours of 12-6pm. The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 3rd at Mt. Zion Baptist Church at the hour of 12pm. Professional Services Entrusted to Wimberly Funeral Home.
