Dr. Kent Allyn Schneider

Dr. Kent Allyn Schneider, age 83 passed March 10, 2023, surrounded by his family. The family will receive visitors from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14. Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at Little and Davenport Funeral Home, 355 Dawsonville Hwy (53), Gainesville, Georgia 30501 with burial at Alta Vista Cemetery.

Kent is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rachel; his 3 daughters: Deborah Greene, Stacey Rutherford and Andrea Fitzpatrick, step-son Adam Casey, sons-in-law: Jeff Greene; Scott Rutherford and Chris Fitzpatrick and daughter-in-law Barbie Casey; grandchildren Colin Fitzpatrick, Ashton, Alyssa and Jeffery Kent Greene (JJ), Tatum, Brenley and Haocong Rutherford, Adam Jr. and Ethan Casey; Brothers Michael and Jeremy Schneider, their wives Ingrid and Vickie Traylor, nephew Tod Schneider his wife Charlotte and son Pieter, niece Lynsey her husband Kevin McCarthy their daughters Sophia and Chloe; niece Remy her husband Waldo Vanderhaeghen and daughter Winona (Winnie), and numerous friends and colleagues.

He was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Jean Kimball Schneider of Collegeville, Pennsylvania. He credited them for his strong career-minded values and for his love of music. Kent played guitar and formed his own band while in College at Furman. He had a diverse playlist he enjoyed.

Kent retired as Regional Archaeologist for the USDA Forest Service in Atlanta. After retirement he started a second career as a Consulting Ground Penetrating Radar Specialist. He received his bachelor’s degree from Furman University, his Master’s and PhD Degrees from the University of Georgia (UGA).

Kent lived a life full of achievements. Among his innovations while at UGA was a mobile lab that traveled to archaeological digs to do artifact analysis on site. On one occasion former President Jimmy Carter met with Kent to check out his mobile lab at the Georgia Capitol. Kent was a diver with the Tenneco Deep Sea Ventures project to explore and map mineable minerals, mainly manganese nodules on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. He was part of the team that found the USS Monitor ironclad ship from the Civil War. He was among the first archaeologists to use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to detect anomalies underground that may be culturally important. With his GPR expertise, he was able to voluntarily help various state law enforcement personnel locate missing people. He also volunteered with groups globally searching for missing WWI and WWII soldiers to bring closure to their families. He traveled the world in efforts to find and preserve cultural resources.
