Here are our top five stories from the weekend you may have missed:

  1. Head on crash claims life of Rabun County man, injures several

A head-on wreck in Rabun County Friday night claimed the life of one man and injured several other people.

The wreck on U.S. 441 / Ga. 15 at North Johnson Avenue in Mountain City happened about 6:30 p.m.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, 40-year-old Gregory Scott Chamblee of Clayton was driving north and attempted to pass vehicles in the left lane and crossed into the left southbound lane.

The front of the car collided head-on with a southbound vehicle driven by 34-year-old Jessica Abel of Lakemont.

Chamblee’s passenger, 49-year-old Curt Lamar Talley of Tiger, died of his injuries.

Chamblee suffered injuries to the chest, head and feet and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

GSP said three passengers in Abel’s vehicle were injured as well: 15-year-old Riley Abel of Lakemont suffered colon and hip injuries; 11-year-old Audrey Abel of Lakemont complained of neck and back pain; and 25-year-old Caleb Andrew Watson of Rabun Gap complained of injuries to his head and hand but was not transported.

Others injured were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

  1. Stephens County man charged with child exploitation 

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has charged a Stephens County man with one count of sexual exploitation of children.

The GBI’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit began an investigation into 32-year-old Alan Savage’s online activity after receiving cyber tip reports from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The investigation led to a search of Savage’s electronic devices and his arrest on Wednesday, Dec. 7, the GBI reported Saturday.

Savage is being criminally charged in Oconee County, Ga., where it was determined his crime was committed.

Savage was taken to the Stephens County Jail upon his arrest. Read More 

  1. Fire destroys Hall County chicken house, nearby camper

No animals or people were hurt when a chicken house fire burned Saturday night in Hall County.

“Around 9:40 p.m. Hall County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a commercial chicken house fire on the 3600 block of Bob Bryant Road,” said HCFR spokeswoman Kimberlie Ledsinger. “Upon arrival, crews found the structure to be fully involved, as well as a camper that was in close proximity. Both the structure and the vehicle are a total loss.” 

Units remained on the scene nearly two hours after the initial call, working to extinguish the rest of the flames due to the size of the structure.  Read More 

  1.  Vehicle strikes, kills Hartwell woman Saturday on GA. 8 

A Hart County woman lost her life about 6 p.m. Saturday when she attempted to cross Ga. 8 near Norman Road in Hart County.

Barbara Brenda Teasley, 54, of Hartwell died when she was struck and killed by a silver 2011 Ford Flex that was traveling westbound on Ga. 8, the Georgia State Patrol reported.

Neither the 54-year-old driver nor her 58-year-old male passenger were injured in the collision.

No charges are expected. Read More

  1. Baldwin names Habersham County Christmas Parade winners

Baldwin officials on Friday announced the winners of the City of Baldwin 2022 Habersham County Christmas Parade “Angels Among Us”.

The first-place finisher taking home the custom blue nutcracker trophy was Habersham Electric Membership Corp. with its lighted truck and trailer.

Judges for Tuesday night’s parade were Eddie Elrod of parade partner Fieldale Farms, Don Higgins of Higgins Properties, Everett Huffman of Whitfield Funeral Homes and Will Regan of the Habersham County Airport.

Despite dense fog and the threat of rain, nearly 50 units from two dozen organizations participated in the parade that this year began from Fieldale Farms and ended at the new Memorial Park downtown.

The Habersham County Christmas Parade alternates years in Baldwin, Clarkesville and Cornelia, with the host city planning and organizing the event each year. Read More
