Former University of Georgia football player Akhil Nasir Crumpton was convicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury for a 2021 robbery at an Oconee County gas station which led to the shooting death of an employee of the business.
According to a report from the Athens Banner-Herald, Crumpton, 24, of Philadelphia, could face up to 30 years in prison following the Wednesday conviction. He was found guilty of attempted robbery as well as a federal gun violation.
The newspaper reported Middle District Court Judge Tilman Self in U.S. District Court in Athens delayed sentencing on the case for at least four months so that a presentencing investigation can be conducted.
Crumpton will also face a murder charge in Oconee County Superior Court. Crumpton is accused of shooting and killing Elijah Wood, 23, at a Racetrac in Watkinsville on March 19, 2021. Federal law determined Crumpton could not be charged with murder in federal court due to the murder occurring during an attempted robbery.
The Athens Banner-Herald reported Crumpton did not testify during the trial.
"We are pleased with the verdict and hope that this first conviction in the case brings the family a small amount of peace," the Oconee County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on social media. "We are very proud of all the hard work members of the Oconee Co. Sheriff’s Office and our state and federal partners put into this case."
