Man shoots two people, turns gun on himself at New Year's Eve party in Gainesville
A New Year’s Eve party in Gainesville turned deadly when a man opened fire, wounding two people and killing himself.
Deputies and officers were called to 100 Spring Street in New Holland around 3:15 a.m. Friday, where they began to clear the building and located three people who had sustained gunshot wounds. Two of those people, identified as Warner Brock and Jessie Brownlee, were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with critical injuries.
Brian Brownlee, husband of Jessie Brownlee and the apparent shooter, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. READ MORE
Northeast Georgia Medical Center welcomes first babies of 2021
Northeast Georgia Medical Center welcomed the first babies born in 2021 at the Gainesville and Braselton campuses Friday.
The first baby of the new year was Jaxon Paul Green, born at 12:48 a.m. in Gainesville to Jessica and Tyler Green of Commerce. The first baby born at the Braselton campus was Koltyn Lee Roberts, born to Alyssa Selkirk and Trent Roberts at 2:54 a.m.
Both families received gift packages from the NGHS Auxiliary, The Window Shops and Safe Kids Northeast Georgia. READ MORE
Corps officials collecting discarded Christmas trees for Lake Hartwell fish habitat
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office recently implemented a Christmas tree recycling program. Now through Tuesday, Jan. 26, Corps officials will be accepting donations of natural Christmas trees to be used as fish attractors in Hartwell Lake.
All ornaments and tinsel must be removed before the trees are dropped off and no artificial trees will be accepted. Trees can be dropped off at designated donation sites located at Big Oaks and Poplar Springs boat ramps in Georgia and Twin Lakes and Friendship boat ramps in South Carolina, as well as Mount Lebanon Elementary School in Pendleton, South Carolina. Polar Bear Swim participants ring in 2021 by running away from 2020
More than seventy people participated in the 23rd annual Polar Bear Swim at Lake Lanier Olympic Park on Friday.
Rather than jumping off a dock as in years past, participants ran from the beach area into the water as part of the overall theme of “running away from 2020.”
Along with the Polar Bear Swim, members of the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club planned a Winter Beach Bash. The event featured a food truck serving hot drinks, heaters for participants to huddle around between turns and 2020 and coronavirus-shaped piñatas. READ MORE
Banks County holds grand opening for new fire station
Banks County’s latest fire station opened its doors to the public for the first time on Wednesday after several years in the works. Fire Station 25 is located just off North Old Hwy 441 in Northern Banks County and will operate as a full-time station with a med unit, engine company and ladder company.
The new station has six bunk rooms, a meeting room, a kitchen and three vehicle bays and is expected to be staffed in about two weeks. Banks County Commission Chairman Charles Turk said there is also a chance of the station serving as a voting precinct for the county. READ MORE
