A man accused of firing shots at Gainesville Police Department officers late last month is facing additional charges in the case, according to the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

Daniel Andrew Smith, 37, was first arrested the night of Thursday, June 25 and charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer. At that time, Gainesville officers were called to investigate a report of an intoxicated suspect at the Home Town Studio Suites on Jesse Jewell Parkway. Police said Smith first shot at them and they returned fire. No one was injured.

Smith was arrested at the scene by the Hall County Sheriff's Office; the agency took over the independent investigation of the shooting, since the GBI was unavailable.

After further investigation, detectives filed additional charges of criminal attempt to commit murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was served with the added charges on Thursday, July 2 and remains in the Hall County Jail with no bond.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the case.
