2nd round playoff wrap: Buford, Jefferson, Rabun, Commerce all move on

Home apparently is where the road to the Elite 8 is.

Buford, Jefferson, Rabun County, and Commerce all used their home field advantage to take big wins Friday night in the second round of the Georgia High School Association playoffs.

Buford hammered Cambridge 42-7 in Class 6A; Jefferson rolled over Hapeville Charter 35-0 in Class 4A; Rabun County routed Model 35-0 in Class 2A; and Commerce pulled away in the second half to beat Gordon Lee, 28-14, in Class A Public to give the home fans a reason to brave cold, wet December weather. Cherokee Bluff, though, could not overcome some early mistakes in a gut-wrenching 23-21 home loss to Carver-Atlanta at Yonah Field.

However, that also meant that Flowery Branch, North Hall, and Dawson County all fell on the road Friday.

The Class 4A fifth-ranked Falcons could not find a way to get past No. 1 Marist in a 24-0 loss in Atlanta. North Hall also was roughed up in a 33-0 loss to Greater Atlanta Christian in Norcross in Class 3A. Dawson County was ousted by No. 2 Oconee County, 42-7, in Watkinsville.
