Saying he wished he had more information to share with the public, Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish said Thursday his investigators have no definitive leads on the identities of bodies found in separate locations of the city in recent weeks.

"Neither body has been positively identified. Although the autopsies were performed, positive ID could not be made without more in-depth DNA analysis," Parrish said in an email. "We expect this to take some time to complete."

On June 21, a decomposed body was found at some property on Lee Street just off John Morrow Parkway. The body is that of a man, but that's the only information authorities have released.

"We do not suspect foul play in that case, and we have some good leads on the identity of the deceased. However, without positive confirmation on that identity, it would be too early to release that information," Parrish wrote.

Just last week, on the night of July 12, someone walking in a culvert along Browns Bridge Road discovered skeletal remains that had been buried in a shallow grave.

Parrish said his investigators are still waiting to see a complete report from the GBI autopsy conducted this week.

"We know the discovery of these remains comes with a lot of questions and we have just as many questions as you do," Parrish said.

He said investigators continue to ask for information from the public that might relate to the discovery of the bones.
