Murder charges have now been filed against a Hall County man in the death of his infant son.
Carlton James Mathis, 28, initially was charged with abuse of a corpse when the body of 6-month-old Carlton James Oakes was discovered June 4 in a freezer in a motel room in Dothan, Alabama.
Dothan Police obtained a murder warrant for Mathis on Tuesday, June 19. For now, the suspect is being held in the Levy County Jail in Florida following his arrest there.
Earlier this month, Hall County authorities tipped off authorities in Levy County that Mathis and the baby's mother, Amanda Gail Oakes, might be in the area. Law enforcement found the pair and Mathis was shot by SWAT officers. He was hospitalized, and once he was released from the hospital, Mathis was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm with the intent to commit a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, child neglect, possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana. He had been charged earlier by Florida authorities with trafficking in methamphetamine after officers found a stash of the drugs in his vehicle at the time he opposed law enforcement.
Once Mathis answers the charges in a Florida courtroom, he will be transported to Alabama to face murder charges in that state.
Dothan Police also charged Oakes with manslaughter for her involvement in the death of her son. At last report, she remained in the Houston County Jail.
