Extra left-turn lanes to be added at busy Suwanee intersection

Posted 7:02AM on Sunday 6th May 2018 ( 5 years ago )

The intersection of Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and Satellite Boulevard could soon have dual left-turn lanes, according Suwanee city documents.

The extra turn lanes come as Phase II of the Sawmill Drive median closure project, which effectively shut down the possibility of making a left turn at Sawmill's intersection with Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

Suwanee City Council is expected to discuss the project, which is being coordinated with the Georgia Department of Transportation, at its work session on Thursday.

GDOT is also resurfacing Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, and an effort is underway to coordinate both the intersection improvement project and the paving.

If all goes according to plan, the paving should be finished by July 31.

The first phase of the Sawmill Drive project got underway in October, when GDOT experimented with the idea of closing the median at the Sawmill/Lawrenceville-Suwanee intersection. It made the change permanent in early 2018.

The goal, it appears, is to funnel traffic more smoothly between Satellite Boulevard and I-85, where Sawmill used to serve as a cut-through. It will now only be beneficial for inbound traffic trying to head north toward Buford.

City council will discuss the matter at 5:30 p.m. at Suwanee City Hall.
