Flowery Branch City Councilwoman Mary Jones has tendered her resignation and will step down from the council at the end of the year.

Mayor Mike Miller said Jones cited health issues when she talked to him last week about her decision. While her resignation is effective on Dec. 31, 2019, Thursday night was her last city council meeting.

"As mayor, it's sad to see her go," Miller said. "She has been an integral part of this community - the whole family has."

Jones, who has served twice on Flowery Branch City Council, was first elected in 2016. She also has served on the Flowery Branch Historic Preservation Committee.

Miller said because of the Jones family's contributions to the city, council members took the opportunity Thursday night to tell the family they will name a new park in their honor.

"We started construction last week on a new pocket park just off the roundabout [at Light's Ferry Road], and since Mary Jones and the Jones family was so instrumental in helping get that roundabout completed with the funding for that through the governor's office, we thought it would be appropriate to honor the Jones family...by naming it the Dean Jones Family Park."  Dean Jones is the late husband of the councilwoman.

Miller said the park is located close to property owned by the Jones family.

"There will be specific benches in the park named for Mary and Dean Jones," Miller said.

Miller said he expects the park to be finished by the middle of February 2019.
