Police: Incident at Jefferson bus stop was a misunderstanding

An incident reported Tuesday to Jefferson Police as a possible kidnapping attempt at a school bus stop was a misunderstanding, police said Friday.

A school bus driver reported that a man called two children by name, attempting to get them into his car. The children told the driver they didn't know the man, and the driver kept them on the bus until the man drove away, police said.

"The subject who was at the bus stop that date has been identified and interviewed. He is actually a grandparent of another child who rides the same bus, and he had not been told that his grandchild didn't need to be picked up that afternoon," Jefferson Police wrote in a social media post.

Still, police said it is important to continue to "see something, say something," even if it turns out to be nothing.

"We want to thank our citizens for keeping an eye out for us and for calling in several tips. While this incident turned out to be nothing, we can never be too safe when children are involved," police said.
