NEW YORK — He didn’t get the win in his season debut on Monday, but Gainesville native Reese Olson said there is plenty to build on following his start for the Detroit Tigers against the New York Mets.

After a shaky first inning, the former North Hall standout dominated the Mets lineup, scattering three hits and striking out three in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He was pulled after a double in the sixth on his 93rd pitch of the game.

Talking to the Detroit Free Press after the Tigers’ 5-0 win in 10 innings, Olson gave himself a mixed review.

“Tonight, I didn't really have a feel for my slider, but I know it's probably my best pitch, so I'm not really worried about that,” Olson told the Free Press. "I know I have the stuff that it takes to get outs. Now, it's just about execution.

“I think the big thing for me going forward is hammering first-pitch strikes and being able to be in the strike zone with all five pitches."

However, he also said he doesn’t feel the pressure to stay in a tight game if he has run out of gas. The Tigers bullpen went the final 4 1/3 innings allowing just two hits.

"If we have the lead, it feels like we can't lose it with those guys coming in," Olson said. "I trust every single guy we have down there."

Olson’s next scheduled start is set for Sunday at home against the Oakland A’s.
