Class AAAAA playoffs: Lady Falcons make history with first Final Four appearance

CARROLLTON — The Flowery Branch girls basketball made history Tuesday with an impressive 61-46 victory over Carrollton in the quarterfinals of the Class AAAAA playoffs.

The win moved the Lady Falcons into the semifinal round for the first time in program histroy.

Coach Courtney Newton-Gonzalez, a Flowery Branch standout a decade ago, said it was a huge moment for the program.

"It's just a great feeling for the entire Flowery Branch community and all those that played before," Newton-Gonzalez said. "I am so proud of these girls. We'll enjoy this one (for today) and then we'll get ready for the next one."

The second-seeded Lady Falcons have been tenacious in the playoffs, taking down two region champions in Statesboro and now Carrollton. They face another daunting task on Saturday in the semifinals at Columbus State, taking on defending Class AAAAA champion Southwest DeKalb. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m.

Against Carrollton, Flowery Branch got going after ending the first quarter tied at 13-13 with the Lady Trojans. The Lady Falcons outscored Carrollton 34-15 over the second and third quarters to run out to a 47-28 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

"I thought we played outstanding defense and that was the key for us," Newton-Gonzalez said.

Taniyah Worth paced Flowery Branch with 19 points. Caroline Wysocki added 11 points, Janoah Williams 10 points, and Queen Scott and Ashley Woodroffe had eight each for the Lady Falcons.
