Basketball playoffs: Six more area teams punch ticket into second round

Six more northeast Georgia teams moved on to the Sweet 16 Saturday in the completion of first round action in the 2017 state basketball playoffs around the area and state.

The Buford girls and boys both advanced with big wins in Class AAAAA. The Lady Wolves routed Decatur 76-38 while the boys held off Lithia Springs 75-63 in a doubleheader at the Buford City Arena.

In Class AA, the Banks County boys moved on with a 53-34 victory over Washington-Atlanta in Homer. In Class AAA action, the East Hall boys escaped upset-minded Westminster 65-64 at Valhalla; the Lumpkin County boys lost 71-58 to Cedar Grove on the road; and the Dawson County boys fell to Region 5-AAA champion Pace Academy, 63-30. Also in Class AAA, the North Hall girls took a big road win over Pace Academy, 44-25.

In Class AAAA, the White County boys were knocked out by Sandy Creek 79-48 while the West Hall boys also fell, losing 80-62 to Region 5-AAAA champ LaGrange. In Class AAAAA, the Flowery Branch boys lost a heartbreaker, 65-63 to Riverwood on the road.

In Class A Private, First Presbyterian knocked out Riverside Military, 62-55. In Class A Public Towns County held off Schley County, 68-58.

Those moving on to the second round will play either Wednesday or Thursday. We will update the schedule when the matchups are announced.
