ATLANTA — Move over Karl Malone. There’s a new mailman in town.

At least one for Georgia coach Kirby Smart.

Smart semi-chuckled when asked how he would assess the performance of Bulldogs’ freshman quarterback Jake Fromm after helping lead Georgia to a stunning yet dominating 28-7 victory over Auburn in the SEC Championship Game at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

“I can’t say enough about his ability to run the offense. He had some good numbers for a freshman in the SEC Championship game,” Smart said.

Fromm was an efficient 16-of-22 for 183 yards and two touchdown passes and did not commit a turnover. He also had a key 17-yard first down run in the third quarter to set up a touchdown throw to Terry Godwin to extend the lead to 21-7.

“Jake’s The Mailman because he just delivers the package to the right people,” Smart said. “He makes a lot of decisions to put these guys in the right play.”

Fromm and the Bulldogs, who sat sixth in the College Football Playoff standings coming into the game, now will have to see if the Selection Committee feels they are one of the final four teams to play for the National Title.

Fromm took over in the first game of the season when 2016 freshman starter Jacob Eason went down with a knee injury. Eason has returned to limited duty but has not been to crack back into the starting lineup once Fromm was inserted.

However, no true freshman quarterback since Jamelle Holieway in 1985 has led their team to a national title. Holieway led the Oklahoma Sooners to the championship that season.

Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm cracks a smile during Georgia's walkthrough at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Friday.
