DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Jaybo Shaw has his first win as head coach of the Dawson County football program as his Tigers took down Banks County, 32-22, Friday night.
The Leopards scored the first touchdown of the night just 90 seconds into the game as Lane Morris broke free for 70 yards and the game's first touchdown. Dawson answered five minutes later as Cody McBrayer punched it in from nine yards out and an 8-7 lead after a successful two-point conversion.
After lightning moved in forcing a nearly 90 minute weather delay, McBrayer got the Tigers back on the board with an 8-yard touchdown to take a 15-7 lead into halftime. The Tigers added another quick touchdown to start the second half as Gunnar Weaver found Dylan Edwards for a 17-yard passing score, pushing the lead to 22-7.
Banks County responded with Morris finding Caden Watson for a touchdown pass, followed by a two-point conversion that cut into the Tiger lead. A Jacob Felkai field goal from 36 yards away extended the lead back out late in the third quarter, but the Leopards kept fighting, scoring on another Morris rushing score, this time from just one yard out, to cut the lead to 25-22.
Dawson County had the last laugh with 3:10 to go as Weaver scored from just outside the endzone after Banks County failed to convert on fourth down, sealing the win for Dawson County.
The Tigers will be off next week before traveling to Pickens to open region play, while Banks County hosts Cherokee Bluff next week.
