Governor Brian Kemp announced on Friday that the Georgia National Guard would provide a total of 316 Guardsmen to Washington, D.C., to join the Joint Task Force-District of Columbia.

Officials with the Governor's office said that nearly 300 soldiers and 16 support staff will aid in President Trump's declaration of a state of emergency in the Capitol on August 11.

"Georgia is proud to stand with the Trump administration in its mission to ensure the security and beauty of our nation's capital," Governor Brian Kemp said. "We share a commitment to upholding public safety and are grateful to these brave Guardsmen and women, for the families that support them, and for their dedication to service above self. As they have demonstrated again and again, our Georgia Guard is well equipped to fulfill both this mission and its obligations to the people of our state."

Earlier this week, the Georgia Guard provided up to 16 Soldiers as medical, PA and MP support staff to JTF-DC.

Nearly 300 Georgia Guard Soldiers were sent to relieve service members already stationed in D.C. These soldiers are scheduled to mobilize in mid-September and will be on active duty, according to the governor's office.

The Georgia National Guard will join with units from seven other states and more than 2,200 Guardsmen from across the country to support crime suppression efforts in the nation’s capital.
