Some mixed signs are continuing to appear from northeast Georgia's labor force when it comes to keeping local residents on the job.

The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) announced Thursday that the Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area recorded an unemployment rate of 3% in July, down one-tenth over the month. One year ago for July, the rate was 3.2%.

Meanwhile, the labor force in Gainesville decreased by 477 over the month and by 1,269 over the year, to 108,702.

The labor force in Gainesville decreased by 477 over the month and by 1,269 over the year, to 108,702.

Gainesville finished the month with 105,421 employed residents. That number decreased by 409 from the previous month and by 986 from the same time a year ago.

Also, Gainesville ended July with 107,900 jobs. That number was down 900 from the previous month and rose by 500 from the same time last year.

In July, initial unemployment claims increased by 54 from the previous month and by 6 from the same month a year ago, totaling 428.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) Commissioner Barbara Rivera Holmes, "July’s unemployment numbers show progress across most metro areas, and even where there are slight upticks, year-over-year trends reflect our resilience. By investing in our workforce and supporting a strong environment for business, Georgia will continue to win and drive economic growth for all Georgians.”
